Responding “in two seconds” to a message received after leaving the office, quickly checking emails during vacation to avoid an overloaded inbox upon return… This hyperconnectivity increases mental load and impacts everyone’s well-being and productivity at work. The French Institute for Research and Safety for the Prevention of Occupational Accidents and Diseases (INRS) identifies three main problems related to overconnection:
- Work Overflowing into Private Life: This has a direct impact on our physical and mental health.
- Infobesity: Receiving an overwhelming amount of information creates a feeling of never being able to stop, affecting our concentration and efficiency.
- Emergence of a Social Norm of Permanent Connectivity: This creates regular interruptions in our work.
The issues around disconnection in the workplace are not something that can be addressed on an individual level alone. The intrusion of technology into our lives makes it a collective issue.
We have decided to seriously address this topic to ensure all our employees can truly enjoy their rest periods. We have adopted an IT Charter that highlights:
- The Right to Disconnect: Not being connected to a digital tool outside of working hours, whether during vacations, holidays, or even breaks and times of the day outside of work hours.
- A Work Culture that Respects Personal Life: Allowing for mental rest and a balance between professional and personal life.
- Respecting Several Rules, Including:
- Establishing working hours outside of which no communication is sent.
- Encouraging the muting of various tools and applications used within the company.
- Encouraging employees not to take their work tools on vacation.
